The German advance on Moscow continues with some forces reaching within 35 miles of the city. In North Africa, fierce fighting rages on a day the Afrika Corps will name “Totensonntag”, ‘the Sunday of the dead’.

A Japanese carrier force leaves its bases to move across the Pacific to Pearl Harbor.

German tanks cross the Moscow-Volga Canal, but are tied down because of fierce Soviet resistance which includes fresh Siberian units.

December 2, 1941

 

German forces reach the northern suburbs of Moscow and come within sight of the Kremlin, which is less than 20 miles away. The weather grows colder with heavy snow.

 

Coded order “Climb Mount Nitaka” is sent from Japanese naval HQ to the task force steaming across the Pacific towards Hawaii. The order confirms negotiations have broken down and that the carriers are to execute the attack on Pearl Harbor.

December 7, 1941

 

At 7:55 local time, Japanese carrier aircraft attack the main base of the US Pacific Fleet at Pearl Harbor. All eight US battleships in port are damaged, five of them sinking.

The United States and Britain declare war on Japan. The Japanese are on the offensive with landings in the Philippines and Malaysia, air attacks on Wake Island, and occupations in Hong Kong and Shanghai.

 

Soviet counteroffensives gain ground in the Moscow and Leningrad sectors.

In the Philippines, the Japanese advance towards the Bataan peninsula continues.

December 27, 1941: In the Philippines...The Americans declare Manila an open city. The defenders are now at their third of five lines of defense in their delaing action agaist the Japanese invasion of the Philippines. The lines run east and west from Paniqui.
