kyhistorian01 Posted November 29, 2009 Share #1 Posted November 29, 2009 Hi, I have a small number of WWII Period official Navy photos in my photo archive and here is one that I thought I would share. Its of the USS hutchins DD-476. The ship was a Fletcher Class Destroyer commisioned 1942 and scrapped in 1948. She earned 6 Battle Stars in the Pacific War and on April 27, 1945 she was seriously damaged by a Japanese Suicide Boat attack off Okinawa and was still being repaired when the war ended. She was struck in late 1945. the ship was named for Carlton Barmore Hutchins (September 12, 1904 – February 2, 1938) He was a U.S. Naval aviator who lost his life in a mid-air collision in 1938. Mortally injured, he was able to remain at the controls and allow his surviving crew to parachute to safety. He was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor.
