BBC - DVD - WWII

I just recently finished the BBC History of WWII. It's a boxed set covering about 40-50 hours of programming.

First off, it is refreshing to NOT see the same old re-hashed original footage we are used to. Second, it is refreshing to see the war from someone else's perspective.

The set does not follow the "Prelude To War" to "The Bomb" format. It is not chronological. Some shows are pure original footage; some are "Band of Brothers" style recreations and one is the classic BBC documentary with that narrator we have seen many times. And, being British, there are facets of the war covered we never see. One especially comes to mind, a piece on the Indian Army. Did you know Indian Vets who fought for the Japanese receive a pension from their government while those who fought for England do not? Interesting stuff!

One caveat. There are two versions of the set floating around. One is the original 12 DVD set and the other is a 25 DVD set from China. The reason the Chinese version takes twice as many disks is it has all the shows in English and in Chinese, thereby doubling the space needed. There is a reason you can get the Chinese set cheaper. You get what you pay for and the quality just is not there.

Anyhow, good stuff.
