iron bender Posted April 26, 2017 Share #132 Posted April 26, 2017 Great pic! Two things jump out at me. Three of the above tankers are wearing WW2 flak helmets, at least one appearing to be the cloth covered model. Also, some post war (WW2) m1 carbine mag pouches are clearly marked on the interior flap, magazine pouch for .30 carbine or rifle M1. Check the paratrooper standing in front of the tank, M1 rifle and at least three carbine mag pouches.
Thaddeus Posted January 31, 2018 Share #133 Posted January 31, 2018 Here's a good website to check out, it has lots of info and pics of 50s era paras showing a lot of different helmet markings http://home.hiwaay.net/~magro/oldnew1.html you have to dig around but its a great site!...and here's a research chart I made with 50s era airborne helmet markings, some are identified some are a mystery for the moment!....mike IMG.jpg What unit designator is the helmet with the pentagon on it? Is it the 511th?? Thad
sgtdorango Posted January 31, 2018 Share #134 Posted January 31, 2018 What unit designator is the helmet with the pentagon on it? Is it the 511th?? Thad Hi Thad...yes the pentagon tac mark is for the 11AB 511th....mike
Thaddeus Posted February 3, 2018 Share #135 Posted February 3, 2018 Hi Thad...yes the pentagon tac mark is for the 11AB 511th....mike Thanks for the response mike! I have a 511th marked helmet line but the helmet did not have any markings. My grandfather was in the 511th during the Korean war era but he said he had never seen the tactical marking on the helmet before. Thad

Great photo Patches, but i think what we have here is actually 11AB 457th AFA with the smaller double white circle tac marks with the 503rds having a much larger white circle tac mark, i think the other small white circle is just barely out of sight from the camera and helmet angle👍🏻...mike

That would be a negative elh, photo taken at Cp Campbell the 187th was not at Campbellthen, has since the late summer of 1950 when it's detached from the 11th Abn Div and sent to Japan, their White bordered RTC patch I think comes out sometime in 1953 right. That's a great point. Can't really tell from the pic but it would be neat to know what unit that patch is for. Edit: looks like an 11th Airborne patch once ya zoom in. Now back to helmets!
