Steindaddie Posted October 14, 2009 Share #1 Posted October 14, 2009 My wife found this coat at a local garage sale and, thinking "it looked kinda cute", paid 25 cents for it.

Steindaddie Posted October 14, 2009 Author Share #3 Posted October 14, 2009 I'm not up on my navy rates - any help?
JBFloyd Posted October 14, 2009 Share #4 Posted October 14, 2009 Petty Officer second class. The X in the diamond is a "Specialist Not Elsewhere Classified", which isn't much help, although it seems to a catch-all for technical specialties not large enough to warrant their own rate. fortworthgal Posted October 14, 2009 Share #5 Posted October 14, 2009 The pattern & fabric content of these didn't change up until about 1973 but you can always tell a postwar jacket by the "Naval Clothing Depot" label and gold buttons. Yours is definitely WWII WAVES. Glad to see someone else could identify the rating. NICE find for a quarter!!!!
Bob Hudson Posted October 14, 2009 Share #6 Posted October 14, 2009 That was one of the wartime emergency rates and this one covered a bunch of jobs: "Specialist X: Air Station Operations, Artist, Cartographer, Intelligence, Key Punch Operator, Pigeon Trainer, Plastics Expert, Public Information, Special Projects, Strategic Services, Switchboard Operator, Topographic Draftsman, other specialists not otherwise classified"

Hi Steindaddie, nice to see it fits, has your wife already got the other parts of the uniform or not, looking good at a forties dance  . StevenL Posted October 15, 2009 Share #10 Posted October 15, 2009 My grandmother was in the WAVES so I always love seeing these. Awesome find for a quarter. Now you just need to find one in seersucker!

Steindaddie Posted October 16, 2009 Author Share #13 Posted October 16, 2009 Great looking coat and wife too I might add My wife says "thank you, you're a gentleman". I got lucky in the "great looking wife" dept. I always joke that she's blind, and that once she regains her eyesight, takes her first look at who she married, she's leaving me.
