US82Bravo Posted September 30, 2009 Share #1 Posted September 30, 2009 Found these at an antique show several years ago. Missed the CPO uniform that was with them by about 3 minutes. Larry
Salvage Sailor Posted October 1, 2009 Share #2 Posted October 1, 2009 Aloha Larry, The USS SARATOGA (ACR-2) had a very interesting lineage, having started out as the USS NEW YORK (also Armored Cruiser 2) She was the flagship of the Asiatic Fleet, was Admiral Sampsons' flagship during the Cuban campaign handily destroying the Spanish Fleet, and was renamed SARATOGA in 1911 to free up the name for a new Battleship. This was during the realignment of the naming of US naval vessels which determined that states would be battleships, major cities cruisers, etc. ACR-2 did not remain as SARATOGA for long, as in 1917 she was yet again renamed ROCHESTER (CA-2) so that SARATOGA could be used for a new battlecruiser (CC-3). This is the one we are most familiar with for due to the 1922 treaty limitations, she was redesigned to become the aircraft carrier USS SARATOGA (CV-3). ACR-2 met her end in Olongopo, PI in 1941, having been scuttled to keep her from falling into the hands of the IJN. So your USS SARATOGA (ACR-2) photo & set of drawings (are they a full set by the way?) are circa 1911-1917. Thanks for posting these.
US82Bravo Posted October 1, 2009 Author Share #3 Posted October 1, 2009 Thanks for your comments Salvage Sailor. The plans are a fabric bound set approximately 6" wide by 25" inches long. They are very brittle as blue lines get with age. They are notated as "Prepared At Navy Yard Boston, Mass". Sheets 1 and 7 fold out to approximately 12" by 25". Scale on the drawings is 1/16 = 1 Foot. Sheet 1 - Profile Outboard Sheet 2 - Profile Inboard Sheet 3 - Bridge Deck Sheet 4 - Main Deck Sheet 5 - Gun Deck Sheet 6 - Hold Sheet 7 - Midship Section The cover page also indicates "Corrected To Build Ship" notations dated January 1, 1908, March 27, 1908, July 1, 1908, May 1909 and July 23, 1915. The last date has a location noted - Olongapo, P.I. Glad you enjoyed the post. Mahalo, Larry
