Just got these Gemscos. Can someone help as to era. Also gilt seems to be repainted, since gilt is on the silver? Thanks Jeff

Hi Jeff, Gemsco introduced these mid-WW2 during the period when certain metals were redirected to the war effort. The guilt (gold finish) on the applied continents was likey of lessor quality, again the war time metals restrictions. A nice set of matching emblems with reasonable wear...

These appear to be in original condition and not painted. The "gilt" you see on the continents and anchor is a plate method. Some are cheaper than others, with later versions being very thin plate. These Gemsco's could not be polished many times without the plate wearing off. They are commonly seen all silver with the plate polished away. While this set is of the 37 pattern, they could have been made up until the early 1960's. I have acquired many sets comparable to yours, all with uniform groupings of the mid 1950's to 1960's. I think it is safe to say that the non-sterling marked, shinier pot-metal appearance examples like these, are definately at least 1950's vintage.
