Here is a mint WWII dated Pile Cap from my collection for comparison with the QM tag.

I have enjoyed this thread the pictures are very good very informative its helped me. Just got my self a dead stock condition MQ-1 pile field cap taken some pictures if you'd like to take a look.

Also found this pile cap labeled as M-51! According to Craig(I ask his expert opinion and he said a legit item)this manufacturer has many contracts with the DOD.So as all items encountered so far are all designated as "M-1951" this called my attention.Must be an manufacturer error!

Do you have a full picture of that cap?I know there are canadian army clothing systems called similar.

I have heard, through word of mouth, that the white pile ones were for officers - but I've never seen any evidence of that anywhere. It just seems to be a persistent rumor.
