renfield Posted August 22, 2009 Share #1 Posted August 22, 2009 I was wondering if anyone could help me with this picture. I got it in a group of 4 pics. As you can see the picture is in rough shape. Can anyone ID the white square marking on the tail? I know the 8th put letters in a white square, but I can not find any info on this. I tried google, but did not come up with much. Thanks for any help. Steve
AustinO Posted August 22, 2009 Share #2 Posted August 22, 2009 http://www.303rdbg.com/8af-markings.html Few options there... Below the box you can see where the plane numbers were painted over 23***** thats your best bet for finding out what plane it is! willysmb44 Posted August 22, 2009 Share #3 Posted August 22, 2009 I can't read the serial #, but immediately recognized the tail marking as that of the 301st BG, which at various times served as part of the 8th, 12th, and 15th air forces in the ETO/MTO. AustinO Posted August 22, 2009 Share #4 Posted August 22, 2009 First numbers have to be 2301 for it to be a b17 in the 42 series and taking a lucky guess: 42-30108 was in the 301st. http://www.301bg.com/AircraftDetails.cfm?AID=271 Edit: 42-30106 was also in the 301st, but was shot down over Hungary in 44. renfield Posted August 22, 2009 Author Share #5 Posted August 22, 2009 Thank you for the info. I will write it down and keep it with the photo group. These are 2 more pics. from the group. I have tried to enlarge the section with the jacket patch, but can not make it out. My photo software is not the best. I wish I could have got the pictures when they were in better condition. I realy do appreciate all the help. Steve
