.45 ACP WWI 20 ammo boxes

Recommended Posts

I know that the 45 auto ammo was issued in 20 round boxes, but I was wondering if there was any way to tell when the ammo was actually made. For example here is a picture of some ammo that was likely military issued. Military ammo in other calibers often have manufacturing dates on them, but this one seems to have a code number.

I have several of those, the dates are on the cartridges inside. I believe most of what I have boxed like that is from '42. Is the box full or empty? If it is full and you are able to open it without damage, you will have your answer. If it is sealed up and you don't want to open one side, not sure how to date them.

They can be dated by the lot number, but I don't know where my list got to. I think they changed to the 50 round box in 1943, and by your lot number it is probably late 1942. I have lot 1088 in my small collection and it is 1941.

If you come across your list of lot number and associated dates I would appreciate it if you could post it. Thank you for the information.

I would love to find 45 cal ammo for the M1911 dated in the range of WW1. If any of you have any sources please let me know.

Vettepartz and Dirt Detective, It would appear that not all the military ammo was date stamped so plainly as yours are. You are fortunate to have come across these for your collections. Thank you for posting them.

Most of the ammunition during the early 1900s was rubber stamped with a loading date. This stopped somewhere between WW1 and WW2, not just sure when.

Years ago cartridge collecting seemed to be more popular than it is now. Practically every militaria/gun show of any size that I went to always had some boxed military cartridges, now I seldom see them.

Here are a couple of boxes that might be of some interest:

Also a couple of drawers from my reference collection - been several years since I did anything with these.
