just-a-good-ole-boy Posted August 2, 2009 Share #1 Posted August 2, 2009 Here is another lid from my last group of lids picked up. Fixed loop no straps and firestone liner. Used to have an NCO bar which was scratched off. Insignia is a decal.

OD MAN Posted August 3, 2009 Share #11 Posted August 3, 2009 AWESOME! Being clueless on helmets I was wondering if the paint and decal are from the 50's era?
Jim Baker Posted August 3, 2009 Share #12 Posted August 3, 2009 Nice........ Scott, that might have been that one.
monkeybone7504 Posted August 3, 2009 Share #13 Posted August 3, 2009 I was wondering the same-- always thought that decal use on liners or helmets was post war, and that ww2 decals were strictly paint jobs
Jeeper704 Posted August 3, 2009 Share #14 Posted August 3, 2009 It's crap, sell it to me for 20 USD including shipping. Please? The last TD Battalion was de-activated in 1946. Decals did exist in WWII. You have any provenance of this helmet? It looks very nice to me (and Jim and other Trackheads here). Erwin

NickD Posted August 3, 2009 Share #16 Posted August 3, 2009 very nice helmet shame the chin strap is missing but atleast its still got both loops in tacked
glenm Posted August 3, 2009 Share #17 Posted August 3, 2009 Any other known examples? The 3rd Armd Division used highly-detailed British-made 3rd Armd paper transfers/decals on their M1 liners, shells and even Tanker's Helmets from pre-Normandy onwards. They were basically varnished over like this one - I would hazard a guess that this is also a British-made paper transfer/decal? Cheers, Glen. Mr-X Posted August 3, 2009 Share #19 Posted August 3, 2009 It is my understanding that the tank destroyer force was disbanded in late 1945. So I am pretty sure it is not going to be a post war decal. He is what I am think is a war time 112th Cavalry Regiment decal. These were worn on the helmet liner by the 112th. Note that it isn't reversed, it is a proper water transfer decal. Blake_E Posted August 3, 2009 Share #20 Posted August 3, 2009 Another sweeet lid Steve?! Dang how many more can there be Keep them coming dude, loving them!
Lucky 7th Armored Posted August 3, 2009 Share #21 Posted August 3, 2009 Do you know why the NCO bar was scratched off? I was thinking maybe because of the target it created for snipers? Haydn
GITom1944 Posted August 3, 2009 Share #22 Posted August 3, 2009 That's a great looking lid. It looks legit to me. You really hit the mother lode! I've often assumed "water slide" equalled post-war. I don't know how the idea got in my head; I'm happy to see info from guys on the forum that increases our knowledge on the subject. In any event, this TD marking looks a little thick in the photo, like it's a paper decal. Am I seeing it right?
just-a-good-ole-boy Posted August 3, 2009 Author Share #23 Posted August 3, 2009 Do you know why the NCO bar was scratched off?I was thinking maybe because of the target it created for snipers? Haydn I forgot to mention that the liner has a butter bar painted on the front. So I would think the reason is because he got promoted.
just-a-good-ole-boy Posted August 3, 2009 Author Share #24 Posted August 3, 2009 Another thing, the decal was on this lid before it was repainted. You might not be able to see it in the pics, but in hand you can see the brush strokes around the decal in a circle.
glenm Posted August 3, 2009 Share #25 Posted August 3, 2009 ... and is it a transfer decal or paper?
