air force marked Computer, Radar Aid Type R-1 (VAID)

A friend of mine gave this to me today. He found two of them in a box he had packed away years ago. Can anyone tell me when it was used and what (VAID) stands for? Thanks!

Dunno, but I will ask a USAF ATC in a few hrs and get back w/ you.

He is trying to recall the name they used but he used it to compute intercepts, angles of attack etc... he said this was before they had a computer telling them all the info..

 

He had a big long technical explanation on how to use it but it was lost on me.....so the above is the best I can do....
