My closet display

Recommended Posts

post-5349-1328380227.jpgThank you, it certainly has come along way. It has been great fun doing it. Thankfully it never ends. New items pop up all the time. These prints are from Esquire magazine, and were done by an artist by the name of A. LEYDENFROST. They are much brighter in person, the flash burned out some of the "pop". Thanks for taking the time to look through the post, and welcome to the forum!

Steve

post-5349-1342571057.jpgWell it has been a few months since I have posted any of my new items. I am always working on my display. I will post a much better update soon. I will show this piece now as it is very special to me. It is strange how small items can be the things you make a connection to. I got the envelope on ebay before I knew what I was doing. Beginers luck. I know I paid under $10.00 for it. When I started doing a bit of research I learned A LOT about Capt. Everett Blakely. He was quite a brave and respected comander in the Bloody 100th. He flew the lead ship on many of the worst missions the 100th flew. Harry Crosby was his lead navigator. I even found several pictures of him in books and on the net. He was one of the few officers to not wear a crusher cap. By the book Army. At the time he sighned this envelope the 100th and other groupes were taking heavy losses. This piece was on his desk at Thorpe Abbotts. That makes it one of my favorite items. Small, inexpencive, not flashy but full of history.

The other Autograph is Rosie Rosrnthal a personal hero of mine. Someone should write a book about his life.

Thanks for the kind words. I will be posting an update soon. I have moved everything around AGAIN! I have also added some great AAF items to my display. I hope this thread helps younger, or new collectors see what can be done with their own collections. It just takes time. I look at the first few pictures and think OMG I have come a long way. Thanks to the members of this forum I have grown my collection and learned how to display what I have.

Many thanks to all who have taken time to post their thoughts on my never ending learning experience.

Steve

I have been moving things around and added a new display case. I will post these pictures of what my collection has grown to. This is how it looks today. Who knows how it will change in the future.

I just got these two items. A very nice B-15 flight jacket and a super clean 9th AAF E.T.O. jacket.

When I first joined this forum I did not know much about what I was buying. I just knew I wanted to collect 8th AAF items. With the help of the members I have gathered a nice collection of authentic items. It has taken years to collect what I have. I hope new collectors will look at this thread and see how my collection has grown. Anyone can have a great collection if you keep at it. It could be just a couple of patches or the advanced collections of some of the forum members have. Collect what makes you happy and keeps you interested in learning the history behind it and you can't go wrong.

A close up of the items in my "new" antique display case. The hats on the upper shelf are, from left to right, a Bancroft Flighter enlisted mans hat, an English made enlisted mans hat and an English made officers cap. It looks like the bill of the officers hat was dyed black post war. The books are Dave Dawson in the 8th AAF and Dave Dawson in the AAF. A series of adventure books for young people. I like to add things like the books to a display. Adds a bit of variety. Also a gun camera.

I've always loved what you have done with this space.

I have a very small bedroom dedicated as the "War Room". The problem is, one wall is a large closet and the other has a large window. Because I have seven bookcases, it really kills the display space.

The basement awaits!!!

Hello Erwin, most of the uniforms I have on display are named, some have been researched and I even have pictures of 2 of the veterans who wore them. I have learned from fellow forum member cobrahistorian, Jon, that it makes a much nicer collection to have a few named, researched uniforms than many common uniforms. I have made an effort to follow his example. I do have some very nice uniforms that have no name with them, and they display great.
