My closet display

post-5349-1249777257.jpgAs far as I know this is the only uniform I have from an Indiana Vet. It is named to Harry Johnson from Terre Haute. He served in the AAF in Iceland. An odd thing, yesterday I read the obits in the Terre Haute paper(I work in Terre Haute) and there was a Harry Johnson listed. It said he served in the AAF during W.W.2 and then lived the rest of his life in Terre Haute. We went to a nursing home about the time I found the group in a Terre Haute shop. I kept the obit just in case.

post-5349-1249777505.jpgMy new favorite new uniform. I just got this from a dealer. Man it is sharp. The pictures do not show how nice it is! It has a sewn on ribbon bar and bullion everything. It has a great 8th patch also.

I need some advice. I got these great B-1 pants and was wondering how to best display them. They are in GREAT condition, and I want to keep them that way. If I hang them on the wall I know over time the leather will strech. How do other people display their leather items? post-5349-1250893191.jpg

Thats a Fantastic display mate. As a fellow collector of 8th AAF items here in the U.K. you've given me some great inspiration to finally get my display sorted.

post-5349-1254682676.jpgI have added a few new things to my collection. I got this poster off of ebay. I had it framed and mounted. In one of the many 8th AAF books I have read this poster was described by the author. This is the first one I have seen. I think it is too big for the "room" but I like it.

post-5349-1254682819.jpg Here it is on the wall. This room is so small I can not get far enough back to get a good shot of it.

These are a few sweetheart items I have picked up. post-5349-1254683059.jpg I have seen quite a few of these pins on ebay. Not sure if they are post war or not.

post-5349-1254683813.jpgAnd some gloves. A9 and A9A. I have no clue as to what the difference is. I have also been getting some things that do not display well. Some studio pictures and B17 pics. I got a lot of 200 letters sent from an airman in the 8th to his wife. I have not had time to sort through them yet. I did read in one of them about the friction between B17 crews and B24 crews. I hope there is more like that in them. The pictures and letters are great to have, they just do not display well.

How hard is it to collect 8th AAF in the UK? I would think that there was a lot of stuff left there. Or was it all shipped back to the U.S.? It is a great hobby. I wish I had started sooner, and had more room. I will keep adding to this post as I find more things I "must" have.

Thank you all for the kind words and great display ideas. Now I have something to share with the forum........I have come out of the closet! I now have the landing room at the top of the stairs! Well part of it at least. I need to find room to move stuff out so I can move stuff in. Slow work, but it will be worth it. This is a B-14 jacket with an English made cap, and a regular enlisted Ike jacket. Both 8thAAF. I will try to keep posting more pictures as I clean up my new room.

Above the hand on the left side it reads "6 weeks after exposure" and above the right hand it reads "6 hours after exposure". I check Ebay almost every day and have not seen another one of these posters. As I said I read about this poster in a book, and now I have one hanging in my home. This sort of thing brings history alive for me. This collection is something I have wanted to do since childhood. Now I have the oppertunity to build this display. I just like to sit up there in my closet and look at these objects. I handle everything I am lucky enough to have with great respect.

Great stuff! USAAF memorabilia always is a pleasure to look at and your collection is amazing. The sheepskin leather left outside and exposed to air will eventually dry and harden. One in that fine condition is best kept packed away in a bag with no air in it.

Looking for WWII personalized or unit marked helmets, combat clothing, Navy and Army flying gear and souvenir items or just interesting stuff.

post-5349-1265563241.jpgHere are a few more poster/adds. They are a great way to put that finishing touch to a bare wall. These are in my new expanded room. I did not choose the paint! A new coat of paint will be part of the clean up. Thanks for the tip on leather storage. I know I need to do something to keep them in the condition I got them. Should I keep them folded flat? I thought about stuffing the legs with paper to give them some shape. I will find room to store them the right way if I knew what the right was was. Ant tips would be helpfull. Thanks.
