1st is a snap on version, the background material is the modern army green suggesting that the veteran was in service into the late 50's.

2nd is not so much a custom ribbon bar as having an unusual device... the plane on the Phil Lib ribbon says LIT II This pin has been on the ribbon for a long time! has anyone seen anything like it?

1st is an 8th AF Tech Sgt's ribbons. his uniform has a Comm specialist patch on the sleeve.

2nd is what I believe a Coast Guard bar. with numerals on the American Def and ETO ribbons. I have been told these were for Sub chasing patrols???

That is the Korean Order of Military Merit, Taeguk Class (link here). WAG on vintage and origin: Custom made in Korea late in Korean War or a few years later, in 1/2-inch width for USMC wear.

Thanks, the strange thing is that it was found with a grouping of WWI era items with the WWI vic and Yangzee Svc ribbon.. think.gif

It does seem an odd combination but there were some WWI vets on still active duty as late as the Korean War. Anything other than those three ribbons in the grouping?

Here is one at the end of MG Martin Morin's Ribbon bar.

Great ribbon bar Schottzie, was he in the Korean War or did he get the medal prior? I asked because I noticed there is no Korean Svc or Korean UN svc ribbons..

Was there any US activity in korea during the inter-war years that troops may have been decorated by S Korea for?

In an interview, he said that he arrived there just as hostilities ended and did not qualify for the Korean Service medals.

No. U.S. forces in Korea between August 1945 and June 1950 participated in occupation and military government duties until July 1949 when the newly established ROK Government took assumed full responsibility. From then until the beginning of the Korean War, the only permanent U.S. military presence were advisors assigned to KMAG. There was a lot of civil strife within South Korea during this period, to include some guerrilla incursions from the north, but nothing approaching actual combat involving U.S. combat units (5th RCT was the last out, in June 1949). ROK Army did not formally exist until December 1948 (there was a Korean Constabulary before then to provide internal security beyond thet civilian police level). These Korean decorations came much later than that and the one Major General Morin is wearing apparently was for post-Korean War service (his National Defense Service Medal dates this picture as 1953 or later.)

Here is an enameled, pin back set I found years ago in Germany. I believe it is German made. I have never seen another, but I'm sure there out there.

  • 4 weeks later...

These two custom racks were for a guy who was with the 32nd Div as a BN XO in 42/ 43, then went over to the 76th Div to take a BN in 44-45. Also was in Korea. Not quite sure where these were made, so if anyone has an idea I would sure like to hear it!

My only custom rack, believe it not. I picked it up for a quarter at the Travis AFB thrift shop back in 1991. I sure wish it was so faded also to know who the guy was. Interesting to find a Soldier's medal rack to an officer.....

The V on the Air Medal is a Valor Device, not a substitute for 5. The bronze oak leaf clusters represent subsequent awards and a silver oak leaf cluster is worn in lieu of five bronze oak leaf clusters. What did your Dad get his Soldier's Medal for?

Nice rack!
