mikbex Posted July 20, 2009 Share #1 Posted July 20, 2009 I recently acquired these rank insignia, I have no idea what they relate to. The shape suggests that they are US rank insignia. Can anyone help?
Teamski Posted July 20, 2009 Share #2 Posted July 20, 2009 Looks like a cut-down MSgt rank to me. -Ski
Pack Rat Posted July 20, 2009 Share #3 Posted July 20, 2009 Thant's a shame. Those looked to be in very good shape before someone gave them a bad haircut. -D
Lee Ragan Posted July 20, 2009 Share #4 Posted July 20, 2009 Looks like someone tried to make a set of the old pre-war PFC Specialist 3rd class chevrons. Too bad a nice old wool set of Master Sergeants chevrons got butchered.

vzemke Posted July 24, 2009 Share #7 Posted July 24, 2009 These were probably cut down by someone needing a pair of CPL stripes, as someone already mentioned. Now before someone goes off on a rant about "who would destroy history like that", its was just as likely done in 1943 as 2003. I've had cut down chevrons much like these turn up in Veterans groupings, simply because they used what they had. But there is a good learning point here regarding the pre war specialist ratings. Cut down chevrons similar to this will often be marketed as "rare" pre-WWII specialist patches, either by the unknowing or the dishonest. This set would be obvious because it is missing the black felt across the top. When the edge is still present it can be harder for the uneducated to tell that the patch has been cut down. The way to tell is to look at the angle on the top chevron. A cut down patch will have a very stubby and stunted looking chevron like this, where as a real specialist rank patch will have a top chevron that has the same rise and apex as a regular PFC chevron. craig_pickrall Posted July 24, 2009 Share #8 Posted July 24, 2009 This is an example of what Vance is saying.
Bsquirrely Posted July 24, 2009 Share #9 Posted July 24, 2009 I recently acquired these rank insignia, I have no idea what they relate to. The shape suggests that they are US rank insignia. Can anyone help? I forget what the rank it is called but the Dutch Contingent in Korea, with US Uniforms had a rank like this that they made from cut downs, it was senior cpl or something.
