A question for veterans and VN SF collectors of the forum.

Do you know who wore ERDLs among the Green Berets in Vietnam ? Who else apart Mike Force, 46th Company and FANK advisors ?

Did SFs attached to the JCRC also wear ERDLs ?

A.

Andrei, in Jason Hardy's and my second volume of "SOG: Team History and Insignia of a Clandestine Army" (out this Fall) there are many photographs of Special Forces soldiers wearing ERDL camo, specifically members of RT New York. I also have photographs of B Company, Exploitation Force, CCC in the field wearing ERDL camo.

Will look through my photos of JCRC teams to see if any are wearing camo.

I hope this helps you.

I don't think I've seen pics of SF guys wearing ERDLs around the camps or anywhere else in VN. Hmmmmm.

You got pics of Mike Force operators in Stanton book and pics of Larry Dring, as a MF as well in SOF issues.

Mike T., cant wait to read your new book and watch the pictures !

Jason and I are doing the final edit and corrections on volume two. Should be out by October or November. Volume two will feature the following teams:

RT Copperhead

RT Fer-de-Lance

RT Maryland

RT New York

RT West Virginia

Will be ERDL camo images from RT West Virginia, RT New York, and RT Maryland.

Well if I could pre-order I would.

I have seen some pictures of Ed Wolcoff on the range with his RPD wearing ERDLS so very keen to see some more, there has been much debate over the years about SOG wearing ERDL "over the fence"

SF do wear ERDLs, but however, TS is more common.

This depends what SF unit you are trying to portray.

SOG tended to wear regular OD Jungle Fatigues (sprayed, modded, plain etc) but Project Delta, Advisors, Mike Force and other non-SOG units did tend to wear Tiger Stripe.

Hey Andrei

If you have The Green beret Magazines Volume V 1970 it shows many camp members wearing ERDLs around camp and at Da Nang and Na Trang also.

yea but most of the time you see em worn in Thailand, Ive got the 1972-73 Low Profile year book and 99% of the troops are wearing the ERDLs, I'll see if I can find you some pix :)

good question!!!

My mate Bill Mathieson was issued ERDL for his time with Det B-51. Late 1970-early 1971.

Previous to that he wore OD Jungle uniforms and Tiger stripes in a couple of A dets in 3 Corps.

In fact he knew ERDL as "B-51 Cammo".

He still has two sets of his ERDL.

During his time at B-51 he tells me that they were not allowed to wear SSIs (though they could still wear their Berets), and this is confirmed in pics he has sent me.

I will need permission from Bill to post some of his pictures, but I have a few showing ERDL.

Hello Legion,

if i may be a tad impolite, may i ask what else comprised the group?

FANK/UITG is of particular interest to me.

Great photo.

Patrick.

  • 1 year later...

Here is a Special Forces JCRC jungle jacket with its patches removed , these were sewn in in typical Thai style with a zig zag sewing machine in cotton.

Jacket was found in a mill several years ago.

Orange panels are the silky type .
