'68, An Khe, Vietnam, just back from recon

My friend, J D, just back from recon and about to go to the infamous Khe Sanh. Behind him is bunker and landing zone, the latter of which was often "hit".

spysgrandson--thanks for the half million hits' photostream on Flickr.com

This helmet belonged to a member of A Battery,7/13th Field Artillery who was in Vietnam in 68-69. I bought it from him direct and the helmet is part of a larger grouping I have decided to sell. In the photo He is wearing this helmet.

I've had this heavily graffiti'd Mitchell cover for over 20 years. It's '67 dated, well used and the graffiti is quite faded. Impossible to verify it...but an interesting piece I'm happy to own nevertheless!

I found out after I left that I could have brought my cover back with me. They told us no field gear could be taken but neglected to say the covers were ok. :(

Mine didn't have much but the names of the fire bases I'd been. Most of which I've forgotten the names now.

I'm not a good artist so mine didn't have designs or pics.

1. I always thought that helmet cover graffiti was limited to Vietnam due to the combat conditions. I figured that the service requirement for uniformity would preclude such liberties and "individualism" elsewhere. Was helmet graffiti prevalent in other US outposts in non-combat countries?

2. I recently bought a graffitied helmet cover on eBay with the following:

“April 25th 1975” - maybe a target short date.

"9 month TG" - I figure this meant 9 months to go, perhaps.

"Pulley" - which may be his name

"The 'Nam' Half Breed" - draw your own conclusions.

"B-More" - Googling this I found it is an abbreviation for Baltimore, although it could mean something else.

"Red Dragon" - Found only one US/Vietnam connotation for this which was a late '60s reference to a U.S. artillery group called the Red Dragon Clan. Since the time frame is off, I don't think it applies. Could have just been a Vietnamese club he liked to go to and hook up with the bar girls.

I don't think it is fake because, hell, even I would have faked something better than that; but who knows?

Anyway, if anyone has some insight to any of the graffiti, please reply. Thanks,

Mike

The right side. There is no graffiti on the back. The cover is worn, but not REAL worn like some others here. But, if he was in-country late '74 to early '75 I figure he didn't see much field service. From what I've read on U.S. troops still in VN this late in the war, he was either a Marine or an adviser. Any thoughts on that are appreciated.

I recently sold this M-1 that belonged to a SAC Security Guam 1960's vets helmet on this forum hope new owner doesn't mind but it is worth looking at. Also a Marine 2nd Div. Liner in my collection. Richard

Only the beach side is graffiti'ed. The jungle side is heavily faded and obviously the cover has been worn green side out most of the time.

Nice helmet, I'm suprised the ink is still dark despite the age.
