dpast32 Posted May 27, 2010 Share #56 Posted May 27, 2010 Hi Guy's, Just a final update here regarding my quest to re-unite to late Lt. Col. Charles H. Ledward's medal group. ( Lt. Col. Charles H. Ledward, Rhode Island Militia, National Guard & State Guard. He served the state of RI from 1884 - 1919, in 1 form or another. ) When I first saw 2 of his medals for sale on eBay back in February of this year, I just knew that I had heard or seen the name before. I went back through my files, & sure enough, I had run across his medal group before, way back in 1996 in one of the late Col. Al Gleim's medal auction catalogs. As I read the item description, I noted that the group contained a total of 7 medals, plus a few assorted related items. The group's initial bid at the time was $325, & apparently I didn't have the cash available, as I probably would have bid on it. So, fast forward to Feburary 2010, when I noted 2 of the group up for auction on eBay. I knew that the group must have become separated over the years, but I fgured that at least I could grab the 2 of them anyway. I bid & ultimately won them, & that I thought would be the end of it. ( Although, I did keep watching the dealer's eBay page, just in case they had any more of the group available.) Well, sure enough, a week or so later they advertised 1 or 2 more of Ledward's medals, but place really high, ridiculous opening bids on them. Being on a roll now to re-unite the group, I knew I just had to have them, but couldn't see getting raped in the process. ( raped yes, brutally raped, no !! ) I cautiously contacted the seller, and advised her of my interest, but that her asking price was way out of line. To her credit, she dropped the prices to what I felt was somewhat reasonable, although many would still call too high. ( Hey, I wanted the group, & figured that I'd have to "bite the bullet" & pay high for it. ) Fats forward another week or so, & now I've got 4 of a group of 7 total. A day or 2 earlier, I had submitted my "wanted" post, asking other USMF members to BOLO any of the still missing Ledward group. Guess what, soon after my posting, an exceptionally kind USMF member advised me that he had just sold Ledward's SWSM #3225 in January of 2010, on this Forum !!! He offered to contact the medal's purchaser, advise him of my re-unification project, & relay my offer to purchase it from him. Within a few days, the medal's new owner contacted me from the other side of the world, & agreed to sell me the much needed award for exactly what he paid for it !! So now, it's only been about 3 weeks since I began the project, & I've managed to obtain 5 of the group of 7. The final 2 missing medals were both originally awarded un-named, so if need be, I'd be able to "replace" them within the group if my search ultimately ran cold. ( I honestly do HATE to replace ANY medals within a group, BUT if all other methods fail, it remains an available option. ) Just when I was ready to cease my "active" search for the missing 2 medals, the original eBay seller contacted me to advise me that she had 1 additional medal remaining from the group. It appears that she overlooked it earlier, & would be listing it shortly. ( Here we go again !! Do you know what it's like to have to try to re-unite a 7 or so piece medal group by bidding on them a at a time !! All it takes is 1 guy to outbid bid me on 1 auction, & the group is again "broken up" ) Well, luckily I did win the final offering, & now I'm pleased to say that I have all 6 of the original group of 7. The last, still missing medal is an un-named "Rhode Island State Guard, WW1 Service Medal", & if I still haven't been able to locate it sometime down the road, I can always go the replacement route as a last resort. As a side note, I must admit that I paid a way too high price for the group ! My grand total spent is now at $720, which is a good deal more than what I feel it should have gone for. I realize I'll never get my investment back on it, but I'm really not interested in selling it. It's going into my R.I. Military History Display, which at the time is really coming along. Soooo, that's my story regarding the Lt. Col. Charles H. Ledward reunification project. I WISH TO AGAIN THANK ALL USMF MEMBERS WHO HAVE SO KINDLY ASSISTED ME IN THIS PROJECT. Best Regards, Dom Pastore Jr. ( dpast32 ) Hello Guy's, I guess I'll add some of my stuff to the list. If anyone has ANY information regarding the following medals, PLEASE contact me at: [email protected].
