M14 stock & buttplate desk set?

I found this today: a Marine Corps Gunnery Sgt's desk nameplate made from what I think is the butt of an M14 stock with flip up buttplate:

Very nice memento. Very well made. I like the chrome buttplate. Even the rear sling swivel was plated. This was treasured by the owner no doubt. One of a kind.

It is a cool piece. Those brass corners are a little corroded, but overall it's held up well. It almost looks like something given as a retirement gift but it could have served as nameplate on his desk when he was on active duty. He was born in 1929 so he probably served Korea through Vietnam.
