Codman, wearing the WWI 1st Army Aviation patch in 1918, here a cut out A with the Air Service Roundel on it, he was in the 96th Aero Squadron, a Bomber unit. My example is from the late 1930's, and was custom tailored made in the new England area. Its one of 3 variants worn on the different seasonal uniforms by officers in the corps. BulgeRemagen Posted November 1, 2023 Share #33 Posted November 1, 2023 My Father was in the 94th Signal Battalion which was part of the III CORPS during their time together in the ETO during WWII. Initially the III CORPS was assigned to the 3rd Army. But for the period of Feb to April the III CORPS was assigned to the First Army. It was during this period that they took the Bridge of Remagen. atb Posted November 1, 2023 Share #34 Posted November 1, 2023 From the US Army Institute of Heraldry website - A black letter "A" was approved as the authorized insignia by the Commanding General, American Expedition Force, on November 16, 1918 and approved by the War Department on May 27, 1922. The [red and white] background was added on November 17, 1950. Are you sure of the timeline? In WW2 the SSI was a black "A" on an olive drab background.
