The Pacific and Collecting

I think the HBO series will increase interest in USMC by bringing the story to a bigger audience.

We have been squirreling away USMC stuff in anticipation.

(of course we also did the same thing for "flags of our Fathers" and "letters from Iwo" but the results were less than spectacular)

I agree with you on the increases overall Jerry.

But, not sure that I agree with you on the stuff after Flags of Our Fathers... have you seen the prices for medals from Iwo vets or KIA's? Nothing cheap about them, and certainly the prices have done nothing but go up and up. Same thing with 5th Division tunics, I would say less so with 4th Division tunics though because there simply are more of them out there in my opinion...

Since I'm in the minority and don't collect anything ETO, I really hope prices don't spin out of control like all of that Airborne/Normandy stuff has. I'm sure Marine helmet covers and HBTs will see a large spike for sure, but they can already be pricey. As far as Flags of Our Fathers, Letters from Iwo Jima, Windtalkers, The Thin Red Line, etc. causing prices to rise... I honestly didn't notice too much. Iwo Jima items are always popular because it's probably the most well known Pacific battle among the general public, at least that's my impression.

As an Australian, the Pacific War is my main area of interest/ collecting. Besides the theater of war being closer to Australia than that of the other theaters, Australia lost the cream of its male populace to the onslaught of the Japanese army's.

It also means more to me as thats where my grandfather and his brother served, aswell as 5 great uncles who also served and died on New Guinea, Bougainville and Rabaul.

On a side note, when the Australian film "KOKODA" (Excellent film on the battle for the Kokoda Track, one of Australia's finest moments, where an untrained and ragged group of Australian Militia slowed the rapid advance of the IJA over some of the most inhospitable terrain in the world.) came out, I did notice a spike in the price of Australian WW2 Jungle kit. Since then aussie issue kit from the pacific campaign seems to fluctuate when ever ANZAC day or Rememberance day comes around.

Also I hope the USMC and US Army kit dosent rise too much as collectors in Australia rely on ebay America a lot to get their gear and with the shipping rates, it sometimes puts the higher end items out of our reach.

Cheers

Agree, and with the economy in a flat line we are are not going to see folks starting any new pricey collecting interests.
