Brian Keith Posted June 4, 2009 Share #1 Posted June 4, 2009 Here are a few more pack mule boxes to go along with the 75mm accessories box I posted earlier. These are the more interesting examples with stenciling and one still has a packing label inside. This box has what I would call a unit code marking, the stripe goes all around it. Note the stenciling, only about 1/2 of the boxes we have are marked or stenciled. We got 11 boxes from a long closed business in Louisville, KY that bought military surplus post WW II. The square hole is for attachment of a vice, (thanks Robin!) the box acted as a bench in the field. These boxes are extremely heavy weight and well built. More to follow Comments welcome. Brian Keith Posted June 4, 2009 Author Share #3 Posted June 4, 2009 This box was contracted or built through the Jeffersonville (Indiana) Quartermaster Depot. Here is the inside of the vice bracket. More to follow. BKW
Brian Keith Posted June 4, 2009 Author Share #4 Posted June 4, 2009 This is an interesting example. Hand painted label, and it has seen lots of field use, shows repairs and it was "broken into at least once as one of the hasps was sawed through. Brian Keith Posted June 4, 2009 Author Share #5 Posted June 4, 2009 Here is a shot of the bottom showing the hanging brackets that attached it to the mule saddle. Thanks for looking. Any comments? BKW
Charlie Flick Posted June 4, 2009 Share #6 Posted June 4, 2009 Very interesting, Brian. You seem to be turning up a lot of good stuff for the museum in those antique shops. The manual illustration below is what the mules look like after being loaded with the 75MM Pack Howitzer. Regards, Charlie Flick
Brian Keith Posted June 4, 2009 Author Share #7 Posted June 4, 2009 I'm glad I wasn't born an Army mule! They had to work for a living! (althought I have been know to be stubborn and probably been called a Jack A--). Thanks for the addition! BKW

Brian Keith Posted June 6, 2009 Author Share #10 Posted June 6, 2009 I'll bet the vice is pretty hard to find, I'm sure I've never seen one. Neat! BKW
robinb Posted June 7, 2009 Share #11 Posted June 7, 2009 It was in the chest when I bought it. Nothing else was, unfortunately.
