(John) Alexander Casselman, Private Company H, 24th Iowa Infantry Regiment. Buried in a mass grave at "the Hill of Death" in Mississippi (John) Alexander Casselman, Private Company H, 24th Iowa Infantry Regiment, Gorman's Expedition White River, Attached to 2nd Brigade, 12th Division, 13th Army Corps, Dept. Tennessee. Skirmish at Madison, Battle of Port Gibson, Champion Hill In the spring of 1863, the regiment joined the army in its advance on Vicksburg, assigned to Slack's (2d) Brigade, Hovey's Division, Thirteenth Corps. Its first engagement at Port Gibson, (Magnolia Hills), May 1, 1863, resulted in 1 killed and 5 wounded At the battle of Champion's Hill, May 16th, the 24th Iowa Infantry sustained a severe loss, having charged, captured, and held a battery of the enemy. It was a daring act, but as it made the advance alone, and without proper arrangement for support, it became the object of a concentrated fire which drove it back in disorder. Its loss at Champion's Hill was 149 Killed & Wounded, with many later dying. Champion Hill Burial Ground Also known as Bakers Creek Burial Ground Champion Hill, Hinds County, Mississippi, USA This is the resting place of many Union and Confederate soldiers. Soldiers were buried in mass graves on the property of the Champion family estate. The battle of Champion Hill took place on May 16, 1863. The Hiawatha plantation house was used as a hospital for the wounded. In the battle of Baker's Creek, or Champion Hill, the Confederate dead were buried by the Federals (Grand Army of the Repuplic) in trenches, no separate graves being made. This spot has been so long neglected that there is nothing now discernible by which the burial trenches can be identified.
