Championhilz Posted May 16, 2009 Share #1 Posted May 16, 2009 Today we marked the 146th Anniversary of the Battle of Champion Hill by placing an historical marker on the summit of Champion Hill. On May 16, 1863, some of the bloodiest fighting of the Vicksburg Campaign took place around this hill. We also had a very small reenactment to give the crowd a thrill. Here are some of the pictures: The ceremony took place on the site of Sid and Matilda Champion's home, where the battle actually started.
Championhilz Posted May 16, 2009 Author Share #2 Posted May 16, 2009 This historical marker is on the site of the original Champion home, which burned down after the battle.
Championhilz Posted May 16, 2009 Author Share #3 Posted May 16, 2009 This is our detachment of Turner's Battery, 1st Mississippi Light Artillery, near the summit of Champion Hill. On May 16, 1863, the area around us would have been littered with wounded and dead from both armies.
Championhilz Posted May 16, 2009 Author Share #4 Posted May 16, 2009 This gun is a two war veteran - cast in 1847, she could have served in the Mexican War and the Civil War. She was made by the Ames Manufacturing Company of Chicopee, Massachusetts - the same company that made shovels for the army during World War II.
