Who can help me please finding the link to the roster on Ancestry in regard of the "movement order, listing POWs leaving France for the USA in June 1945 and listed both their US Service numbers and their POW ID numbers!"....Probably I am seeking for the wrong document at Ancestry.

I have a couple of POW tags that I would like to check there.

Thanks from Holland.

In ancestry there are certain ships that brought POWs home in 1945. The key to finding the movement orders is finding the ship, then looking through the movement orders. The Admiral Benson is a ship I would focus on.

All New York, Passenger and Crew Lists (including Castle Garden and Ellis Island), 1820-1957

I would guess however those tags are probably not from Americans based on the number range of the XIIA tags and very few Americans were in IVD. Did you buy these in Europe?

Hi,

Fantastic pieces, thanks to all of you for sharing! Here is a little part of a grouping which belonged to a 15th AF Air Gunner shot down in may 1944 :

Tag just acquired at the ASMIC show:

Stalag 12A from a POW serving with the 28th Cavalry reconnaissance Squadron captured 12/12/44.

Tag number matches the POW manifest .

Recent eBay find! STALAG 4B Tag

Based on the number it was issued during the Battle of the Bulge.

No luck yet tracking down the number online, however, I did find a POW number (same camp) off by 1 digit! It was issued to a Soldier in the 44th Engineer Combat Battalion, captured 19 DEC 44. So maybe this was a fellow Combat Engineer!

Looking forward to getting out to DC sometime and researching it out more! Hopefully I can put a name to the tag!

There is a set of records from the US Army Provost Marshalls Office at College Park that lists all US POWs with information about each including the POW ID #.

Ive seen scans from it. The problem is its a hard copy that has 100,000 plus entries in it. Hard to find a match!

Last time I went to DC, I was able to review original captured German Rosters from various POW Camps... They list POW# by Camp and have all the info on the captured soldier... So I might have some luck finding more on this tag!

Here are some scans from STALAG 13C - POW Numbers 20282 - 20293 were listed.

Being Captured German Documents, they’re not 100% complete nor all there…

So 50/50 chance?

But I do remember quite a few being there, so it's worth a shot! They’re on old stinky German paper that's falling apart and some are on microfilm… They are under the Provost Marshall group, but I don't remember the subgroup...

They’re listed by German POW Camp, then in order by POW Number. All in German...

If I get back out there in the next few months I’ll let you know, maybe I can help ID some of your tags! Always great helping to restore that piece of history, putting a name to the number!

I have seen enough examples of this style of Stalag Luft 6 dogtag to be convinced they are correct. I have seen 5 so far, and I own 2.

Here is one to a 381st BG EM.

Hi Kurt and others. I think I've been late to the party with this thread but have really enjoyed looking and learning. I don't think I posted this on the forum before, but 22 years ago, I visited the site of Stalag IV B or at least the birch forest where the camp once was. I was able to kick around in the underbrush and uncovered some pieces of thick broken glass and other detritus. In about 2005 I met a 78th Inf. division vet who had been interned there for a time. I wrote to him later and mailed him the pieces of the camp that I had found. He was really happy with that.

Anyway, thanks all for this great thread!

Paul

Kurt,

I bought this dogtag from you several years ago. Any chance you still have any research on this man? Or possible to assist me?

Thanks!

Silvano

Hi Silvano

I would’ve given you everything I had at the time.
