I was looking at patches worn by PT crews in the Pacific and ETO during WW2 on Motor Torpedo boats worn on jackets like the N1 deck jacket. Some patches as shoulder insignia and some squadron patches based on aircrews designs plus the stencilling also found on such jackets and clothing. Any one know if the posted patch is a standard patch worn by most PT crews or belongs to a certain squadron, would be interested to know this patches history. It also stated that it glows? so not sure if originals can be dangerous to collectors if they contain glowing radium on them for the glow effect.

I have a standard dress blue WW2 era jumper with that patch on the shoulder. As far as I know they were standard for PT boat crews.

Yes.  BPCL 265-44 was signed on September 14, 1944 which replaced the block “PT” distinguishing mark with that shoulder patch.  It was for enlisted personnel regularly attached to motor torpedo boat squadrons. Enlisted personnel of the motor torpedo boat squadrons are considered to be those who have been designated as qualified to serve in motor torpedo boats and who are assigned to motor torpedo boat duty.” Personnel who were assigned to base components or tenders were not authorized to wear this insignia unless they were qualified and authorized to wear it from a previous assignment. Although you may see some examples in white with blue sewing, the white one was not an authorized version.

Many thanks for your replies, much apreaciated. Could this be worn on a deck jacket on the shoulder or was this just for the particular clothing pictured and what was this glow patch thing I have seen when these are up for sale?
