Gear Fanatic Posted May 31 #1 Posted May 31 Hey all, got bored over the weekend and decided to make a replacement sheath for my western (which has also seen better days) I’ve never worked with leather in my whole entire life. I don’t own anything to make anything with it etc. so I just winged it. Traced the shape out and measured a little then cut it out. Glued the ends together then I measured out the holes and drilled them through. Then I used a paper clip and some “cord” to stitch it together forcing the cord through the hole with the paper clip then pulling it snug. Then I threw some leather conditioner on And this is how it turned out. Still need to make a button closure tab for the handle, but other than that I think it’s pretty neat and will do the job. Certainly pretty good for what I had to make it.
Manky bandage Posted May 31 #2 Posted May 31 Fantastic effort, its actually oddly got a certain charm to it that fits with the state of the knife itself. What you could do, is find yourself a smooth screwdriver handle (preferably wood), use the end of the handle and press down on the fibers of the leather. You can also run it quickly along the edges too, essentially burnishing the leather. Maybe you'll find yourself wanting to make more leather goods, and learn a fun skill set along the way.
Gear Fanatic Posted May 31 Author #3 Posted May 31 Definetly, it was very fun, but extremely frustrating doing it without the proper tools. I will definitely go and do the screw driver thing you mentioned as well. The ones you made a while back actually got me hooked on doing this and I was hoping/glad you chimed in 😊
Gear Fanatic Posted May 31 Author #4 Posted May 31 Just added the tab for the handle, used an old split pin as a “button” to secure it
Gear Fanatic Posted June 2 Author #6 Posted June 2 Added a small tie or attempt at least, it’s not very good.
