When I purchased this set of dog tags and small black disc I didn't have a clue what that black disc was for nor did I know anything about the man behind the tags.  I wasn't really sure what caused me to purchase this because it's not something I would ordinarily buy.  In any case, here's what I found about the man and the black round thingy, both of which I found interesting.

Very interesting Matt, I enjoy finding out about the person behind the dog tag!  And he was an Oregon guy too!  I also have a good friend that moved to Hayden Idaho., small world.  Thanks for sharing.

Thank you Ken and you’re welcome.  At first I was more curious about the round disc but after gathering the info on Fisher I was more interested in him.

I had never seen one before either until I bought a small group that had one on his dog tags. We keep learning.

My USAF Dad had a Radiac on his dog tag chain exactly as the one in the photo in the original post. The first time I remember seeing it was in Japan in 1957.

Definitely a relic and reminder of the Cold War.

What type of plane was your father on, that is if he was on a plane?  Lt Col Rice was on a B-29 first and then a B-47.

Not Rated. He was PI with the 67th Reconnaissance Technical Squadron at Yokota (1957-1960). They were processing and interpreting the Photint/Elint from all the recce activities in the Far East. Both the 56th Weather Reconnaissance Squadron (R/WB-50D *photo is a sampling scoop on a WB-50) and the 6091st Reconnaissance Squadron (RB-50G/Elint) were routinely gathering samples of radioactive fallout from the Soviet nuclear tests at Semipalatinsk for analysis. The CIA U-2s at Atsugi were also involved in sampling.  Japan was downwind from the test site in Kazakhstan. Hence the little black hockey pucks.

Very interesting and thank you very much for the response.  I wasn't expecting that but that's very neat and the black hockey puck definitely makes sense in light of what your father was involved with and the location he was at.
