Jim C Posted April 8 #1 Posted April 8 Hello everyone, I’m new to the site and salute you my fellow collectors. I came across these 2 WW1 jackets at a thrift store. My questions are 1. What does the patch with the star & chevron represent? 2. How were these utilized (meaning field or dress coats) since one is a heavier wool fabric (the one without collar buttons)? 3 Candy was left in the one pocket and stained the material. How do I try to clean it? Thanks Jim C
aznation Posted April 8 #4 Posted April 8 You're welcome. Also, if you can unfurl the name tag on the uniform we might be able to provide additional information. Also, a closer pic of the collar insignia if possible. It looks like a caduceus for medical but I'm not 100% positive. Thanks...Matt
Jim C Posted April 8 Author #5 Posted April 8 The name is Winslow Henkle and it is a medical collar pin.

I'm not really finding anybody by the name "Winslow Henkle" as far as medically related or even WWI related. Sorry. Perhaps someone else can find something. There's a chance that Winslow was a middle name and he went by that but we would pretty much need to know his first name if that were the case.
MAW Posted April 9 #7 Posted April 9 For clarification on the star question; context is everything. If you see a star associated with 3 or 4 overseas stripes, that is most likely a "first over" star. If you see a star with a single service chevron, that is likely a voluntary enlistment star...an unofficial way to show you enlisted, as opposed to being drafted.
Jim C Posted April 9 Author #8 Posted April 9 Interesting. I wish i had a chance to talk to the lady dropping off the jackets at the thrift shop. Saw her handing them to the worker.
