Marktk36thIL Posted April 8 #1 Posted April 8 After some debate, I’m confident to say this is an elaborate (and expensive) wartime private purchase ID badge from an unknown jeweler. Charles F. Jackson He was a residence Chicago, IL. Enlisted on 7/16/1861 as a private and mustered into "Battery B" Co. Illinois 1st Light Artillery. He was Mustered Out on 7/23/1864 at Springfield, IL. He would see fighting from Grant's earliest campaigns through Atlanta. He was a member of GAR Post # 5 (George H. Thomas) in Chicago, IL. He would pass away 4/27/1919.
iron bender Posted April 8 #2 Posted April 8 Beautiful badge. How's the 15th Corps badge and crossed cannons attached? Also, directly below the B Battery letter, it looks like something else may have hung from the badge. Maybe a ribbon behind the badge? Or simply decorative? Congratulations on a great find!
iron bender Posted April 8 #3 Posted April 8 Next time I'm at Vicksburg I'll get some good pics of Battery B monument and their position markers

I can’t say for certain. If it was silk, then it definitely would have fallen apart by now. I’ve not seen another like it, so another reason why I think it was wartime, usually there’s always a couple post-war badges floating around. The lettering from the left, top, and right says, “ ILL - Light- Arty. The 40 Rounds and cannon barrels are soldered on.
