ArtyScout Posted March 25 #1 Posted March 25 Hello everyone. I've begun my next project. A 1/72 scale P-51D Mustang by Airfix of the Tuskegee Airmen at Ramitelli Airfiekd in Italy. Semper Fi. Manny
ArtyScout Posted March 27 Author #3 Posted March 27 Hey everyone. I got some work done on my Mustang. After painting and weathering the cockpit and pilot seat, I concentrated on the non-existent instrument panel. I painted on some Future Klear on the instrument panel halves and using some small Custom Dioramics cockpit decals I added them to it. They probably won't be seen but at least I know they're there. Then I sealed the decals with some more Future. 1/72 scale figures are very hard for me to do, so I did my best with the pilot and sat him in the cockpit seat. Not too bad. Once the two halves were glued together the control panel and the pilot looked decent. Now onto the next step. As always, all comments and critiques are greatly appreciated. Semper Fi. Manny
ArtyScout Posted March 28 Author #4 Posted March 28 Correction on my previous post. The decals are from Cockpit Details; NOT Custom Dioramics. Sorry. Semper Fi. Manny
ArtyScout Posted March 29 Author #5 Posted March 29 Got most of the airframe done. Now mask what I need to mask to get some airbrushing done. This kit goes together well. Semper Fi. Manny
Proud Kraut Posted March 30 #6 Posted March 30 Because I was away from my PC I´m running late. Great to see that you have started a new project, Manny. Looking forward to seeing how you´ll paint your Mustang.
ArtyScout Posted April 3 Author #7 Posted April 3 Hello all. Got some work done. I saw that the bottom of the plane had a hole to attach the stand that came with it. Of course I had to fill it up prior to painting the wheel wells and masking and painting the aircraft. I got it mostly done. Just need to paint the anti-glare panel. Coming soon. Enjoy the pics. Semper Fi. Manny
ArtyScout Posted April 5 Author #9 Posted April 5 Hello everyone and Happy Easter. I got some more work done. I'm getting to where the decals get applied. But not just yet. Enjoy the pics. Semper Fi. Manny
ArtyScout Posted April 8 Author #11 Posted April 8 Hello everyone. Got the decals done on the airframe. Still need to paint the canopy and the propeller and nose spinner and decal it. So far, so good. Semper Fi. Manny
Brian Dentino Posted April 8 #12 Posted April 8 Looking very nice, Manny! Good to see you doing a plane this time.
ArtyScout Posted Friday at 05:56 AM Author #13 Posted Friday at 05:56 AM Well, I'm moving along. I painted and decaled the propellers and spinner. I have one more decal to add, attach the landing gears and propellers then mask the canopy. Semper Fi. Manny
ArtyScout Posted Sunday at 06:07 AM Author #14 Posted Sunday at 06:07 AM Hello all! Except for one last thing, (the aerial wire) this Mustang is done. I'll be doing the base next and will be done. Enjoy the pics, there will be more later. Semper Fi. Manny
Proud Kraut Posted Sunday at 07:42 PM #16 Posted Sunday at 07:42 PM Your Mustang looks awesome, Manny. Excellent paintjob and realistic looking decals. You have applied them without any shiny edges, well done! Will The Mustang receive a final wash to highlight the gaps between the panels?
Brian Dentino Posted Monday at 12:35 AM #17 Posted Monday at 12:35 AM Looks great, Manny. Can't wait to see the finished base for this. Well done on the plane.

Lars, I had that same thought, but at 1/72 scale I'm a little reluctant. If I did it has to be a pin wash. I've checked many pics of the Mustang and I have to admit any gaps on these planes seem negligible. But it's not out of the question. If I find some decent background pics, I'll take some more pics. Here are a couple of pics with the WWII Marston Mat runway base. Semper Fi. Manny
Proud Kraut Posted 21 hours ago #19 Posted 21 hours ago I think I understand, Manny. It´s for sure a challenge at a 1/72 plane. Probably it looks better without any washes. I´m curious about it because a (silver) Lockheed P-38 is awaiting it´s assembly and painting over here. Lars
