This might be a long shot, since the shoulder patch in this image is only barely visible. I'm trying to identify the unit for the very elderly brother of this soldier. I have no information about him other than his name, the fact that he may have come ashore on Omaha Beach on D+1 or D+2, and that he may have served (or enlisted with) another local soldier who was part of the 391st Armored Field Artillery (AA). Don't know if this is an Anti-Aircraft Command patch or something else entirely.

Hello RG,

The patch is indeed for the Anti Aircraft Command..

If you provide the name of the individual, we may be able to help with research

The battalion departed the Boston Port of Embarkation on 27 Feb 44; arrived England 8 Mar 44; arrived in France on 14 Jul 44. Its location during Aug 45 was Mondorff-Bains, France. The battalion was given Campaign Credit for Normandy, Northern France and the Rhineland Campaigns. (Source: Shelby, Stanton. US Army WWII Order of Battle).

Thanks immensely!! This matches with what I suspected from the little bit of family lore I have heard. The assignment at Mondorff-Bains puts him at Camp Ashcan, Luxembourg. Thanks again. Edward's 93-year-old brother will be happy to get this information.

One final question, have these records (morning reports, etc.) been digitized and put online?

Thanks, I've been able to track down a few other morning reports that mention this soldier, which really helps me to begin to put together a narrative of his service. Can't wait for the 1945 reports to be available. They'll really help with some research I've been doing on my own grandfather.

Unfortunately, NARA was supposed to have had them digitized by now. Hopefully, it will be soon.

You can obtain 1945 morning reports now through private researchers, e.g. Golden Arrow Research, though for a fee.

Budget is limited, so I'll probably wait.
