I recently won this hat on ebay. It's a WWII sailor's hat that he and all his crewmates signed. In the description it states that inside the rim is written "U. W.-436". Does anyone have an idea of what this means?

Thanks,

Response to "U W" meaning. I am reasonably sure the Navy calls their research centers "U W". they do research on many things including cancer, allergy causing things, etc. From what I've heard, they do great work there. The Navy also has a reserve officer training school at U W[university of Washington] I hope this helps. If I'm wrong, please advise same.
