SickFarce Posted March 7 #1 Posted March 7 Not so long time reader, first time poster. Hi, I just registered today and wanted to say... well, Hi. I'm 38 years old from germany and have been interested in military history for as long as I can remember. I was destined to get into these things, as my grandparents und -uncles war stories, my fathers service as a paratrooper in the Bundeswehr and all the items and pictures that lay around our house always fascinated me deeply. I also grew up near a US military installation in Bavaria (something I might open a thread about one day as I'm sure, I can finde some people who been there back then on here). My aunt moved to the US in the mid 90s and married a texan vietnam vet named Earl, who had a huge impression on me although I could not communicate with him because I could not understand english yet. I only met him once, since he died a few years later but he always stuck with me. Later on I started to grow out of this childish fascination for war as action and adventure and started to get into all aspects of military history, from the smallest bullet to the biggest political backdrop or personal stories of veterans and new insights by historians. These are things that occupy me every day in some way, shape or form. I started collecting as a kid and had a small but nice collection of cold war stuff and 90s US-militaria I also used for airsoft. All of it is long gone now as I got rid of it when I moved out, as I had developed other interests at the time. Something that bothers me quite a bit, still :) I'm also into scale modelling now and again. My main interest lies heavily on WWII in general with a focus on allied history. With another strong focus on the vietnam war, but I'm generally very interested in everything from WWI to the GWOT-era (and beyond). Recently, early january to be precise, I decided to get into it all again, collecting vietnam war related militaria, maybe dabble in some reenactment eventually. So far I only have a few items like an M1956 LCE, an M1 helmet and a few cool reproductions. While researching for this, I inevitably came across the forum, so here I am. Looking forward to learn a lot and maybe contribute a bit even. Cheers.
deddygetty Posted March 7 #2 Posted March 7 Welcome to the forum, sir. I spent a little time in Germany with my parents in the early 1950's and in the Army in the early 1970's. I was stationed in Kaiserslautern, Stuttgart, Ulm/Neu Ulm, Heilbronn, Hanau, and Bindlach/Bayreuth. I've visited a whole lot more places. I share your fascination with military history, stemming from my dad's 37 years in uniform during WW II, Korea, and Vietnam. I was the historian for the 2d Cavalry Association for many years and also did a lot of research on the 99th Infantry Division and the 99th Cavalry Reconnaissance Troop, which my dad served with in WW II, and the 2d Infantry Division, which he served with in Korea. And I also did a little research on the 11th Panzer Division, which was one of 2d Cavalry's rivals several times at critical moments in WW II and bonded a friendship that continues today. Prost!
