Hello!

My dad is an associate member of MOLLUS and bought an original medal from 1865. He's spent years trying to find out who the original owner was, but couldn't find anything. The engraved number on it is 9439.

I'm wondering if any of you who have a Union Blue book would please take the time to try to find it for him?

He has reenacted the Civil War since the mid 1960s and is also an associate member of the Sons of the Union Veterans of the Civil War (asyou can see from the other medal in one of the photos). He was adopted, so he couldn't show any relatives who fought in the war, which I know he's longed to do!

Anyway, he's going to be 80 this year, so I thought it would be nice to try to find out who this medal belonged to, and I don't own a Union Blue book.

Any help would be most humbly appreciated!

If no one can help me, does anyone know where I can find the Union Blue book? The copies I've seen online are around $85, and I just don't have that much for one book. My library system doesn't have it either.

Thanks for any help i can get.

The problem with the Union Blue book is it has the list of names and numbers, but NOT a list of numbers...so it is very difficult to use with over 10,000+ names when you have number you want to look up.

There are several guys on the Forum that have created their own lists that are based on the numbers.  I think if you are patient one will chime in.  You might also try searching other threads on this topic to see if you can find one of them.

I also believe over the years some people have had luck contacting the Society directly.  Given your father is an associate member, maybe they would look that up for you.

Thank you, unclegrumpy, I'll do that. And I'll be patient lol

Another downside to Union Blue is that it only includes actual Civil War veteran members. The badge is question here was issued to a hereditary member, so it's not listed in U.B.

Attached is the attribution from the 1901 New York Commandery roster of members.

The medal shown has a Original Companion red stripe...I'm surprised it doesnt have the blue center stripe for Hereditary Membership.  Must be re-ribboned?

Wow Adam R!

Thank you for finding it!! I didn't know that they'd changed the ribbon colors like that, and I'm pretty sure neither did my dad. He thought he was buying one for a CW veteran.

As I mentioned before, he is an associate member of MOLLUS. I spoke to him about having them look up the number. He said he'd asked them, but never got any answers.

He'll be thrilled to know the name of the person connected with this medal!

I truly appreciate what you've done for us! All the best wishes.
