easterneagle87 Posted February 17 #1 Posted February 17 This has been on my mind, Has anyone seen OR heard of any changes to the Defense Distinguished Service & Defense Superior Service Medals? Currently the backs of these say: "From The Secretary of "Defense to:" I will refrain from any snarkiness when referring the change to the Department of "WAR". IF ... changes are made, will / would they use up existing stocks or discontinue and begin a new issuance of these awards with the updated wording: "From The Secretary of war to:" , This question would also pertain to the awarding of the "previously" issuance /existence of ALL the DOD's civilian awards.
atb Posted February 17 #2 Posted February 17 Since War Department is not the "official" name, I think the current medals being used will continue. I could be wrong, but I think the Congress has to approve a departmental name change. It can't be done for the reason, "because I say so." Does anyone have better or more correct information? What happens if the name is changed officially, I don't know, but using up old stocks shouldn'e normally be out of the question.
Dave Posted February 17 #3 Posted February 17 Since the name hasn't been approved by Congress, I doubt they'd change the medals, but I'm not surprised with anything. We're required to use the new name on all documents, etc., so who knows. Maybe they'll make a new medal and then change it back, creating a "rare" variation for us collectors! :)
