I picked up a Purple heart this medal still had the sterling silver inside it due to the dark engraving and it is a little heavier than the later Purple Heats it is engraved EDWARD j. but I can't make out the letters his navy uniform cracker jacks has Edward James. Diuba stamped in it. The shop owner said he was born in Virginia and his parents were from Ukraine immigrants but I'm having a hard time trying to see why the Government would have engraved a last name this way. You can tell it was hand engraved. anyone ever come across a engraved Purple Heart like this?

Just for clarification- this Purple Heart is NOT a Navy Type 1 or Type 2 and there is ZERO sterling silver in the medal. This is a standard, army issued Purple Heart. The dark lettering is from the chemical process used to make the lettering stand out.

This is really cool private engraving. I like the art deco style!

I wonder what the reconciliation between the uniform and medal could be? Put together because the names were "close enough"?
