bay89 Posted February 10 #1 Posted February 10 Hey everyone.. hoping to tap into the deep knowledge here regarding a pair of metal “Azurine” flying glasses / aviator-style sunglasses. I’m trying to confirm manufacturer, production era, and whether these had any verified U.S. military aviation use or were primarily civilian/pilot private-purchase items. I have emailed 2 museums and a few well know vintage sunglass manufacturers as well as AO but nobody has any info on these I had one estimated assumption being that they thought they might have been produced sometime late 1920s or early 30s l What I currently believe / have concluded so far: “Azurine” appears to be more of a trade or style name rather than a confirmed manufacturer (still trying to verify). Construction and design suggest early 20th century (1920s-1930s) ??aviation use possibly WWII Similar examples appear loosely associated with flying glasses or pilot eyewear but I have not found definitive military contract documentation. Physical details of my pair: Metal aviator-style frame No visible manufacturer markings High set bridge saddle with a possible "art deco" design Low set temple hinges Beading and design around frames They sit close to the face compared to later style aviation sunglasses What I’m specifically trying to learn: Was “Azurine” an actual manufacturer, distributor, or just a lens/style name? What is the approximate date of manufacture? Any known military contracts or documented WWII aviation use? Confirmed manufacturers producing this style under different branding? Approximate production years based on frame construction? Civilian pilot gear vs. issued military equipment? Thanks in advance — looking forward to learning from you all.
Marshallj Posted February 10 #2 Posted February 10 Based on the engraving around the frame I would say civilian glasses.
HUD69 Posted February 10 #3 Posted February 10 A quick internet search gave the following: Seems to be the same like Moto-glass with Azurine lenses for use on motorbikes Also a foldable version is available Seems to be from the 40's (2 different sources indicate that time frame) Price range, anywhere between 32 USD and 151 USD Can't find a direct link as to be original flight use.
