I have had this for several years and thought it was just scrap but recently I saw an image of what was supposed to be GI's as guards at a WW2 POW camp and several of them had this two-chevron-with-a-rocker insignia on their sleeves. Was this ever a thing or was, perhaps, the image some AI weirdness.

Hello oldpackrat.

This just looks to me a staff sergeant rank patch with the top chevron removed. I'm not sure in what context that would have been done.

Can we see the picture you were talking about?

Thanks,

Looks like it was created by trimming a Staff Sergeant, Technical Sergeant, or Master Sergeant chevron.

I have a example in a navy grouping I own where something like this was done. Higher rank but was sewn over to appear as a lower one. Maybe a case of "I don't want to purchase another set of chevrons, I'll just modify the ones I have" or "I can't get my hands on the correct rank for whatever reason so I'll modify the ones I have".

Could also be something done way after the war for theater purposes or the like.
