Hey guys, I know a little bit about US military rifle stock proofs, but my Remington 1903A3 has abundance of small proofs that had me scratching my head a bit. I know about the proof fire, inspectors and Arsenal reissue, but there’s several small proofs near the trigger group floor plate that had me a bit puzzled. Can anybody shed some light on this? Thanks.IMG_5341.jpeg.43ea0ff6e40129cac49569328bba694b.jpeg

Looks like you have a nice example here. The inspector marks in front of the floor plate are correct from Remington Arms. Nice to see the front sight cover as well. Most were removed to obtain a better sight picture. How many parts are marked with the "R"?

As far as the stock markings go, what I see is all factory Remington… nothing additional that would indicate an arsenal rework.

Hi John. What about the RA on the left side? Isn’t that Raritan? I didn’t see any blue pieces on this rifle. Many years ago I had a Smith Corona and it did have several blue parts. I never should’ve gotten rid of that.

How’s everything on your end? All is well here except for the 8 inches of frozen snow.

But get back to those small proofs, you think they’re all Remington applied? Any idea what they’re for as I’ve never noticed multiple small proofs like that that I can remember.

Here is what the Joe Poyer book on the 1903 rifle says.

Well, back in the day I had a minty Remington 03-A3 like yours, and it was my understanding that the ‘RA’ in this case stood for Remington Arms. RA has also stood for Raritan Arsenal as well, but it was there along with other markings associated with a refurb.
