6th cloud banner - sheldon Posted January 21 #1 Posted January 21 Interested in finding out how much I should insure this. My Father,Capt. John Warren Sheldon, while a member of the American Chinese Composite Wing in India and China received “The Cloud Banner” a citation from Generalissimo Chiang Kai Chek. The English Translation of the scroll (award) reads: In the highest distinction is this testimony on the account of Capt. Sheldon, who has been bestowed by the National Government (of the Republic of China) through the by-laws of the Army-Navy-Air Awards (Decorations), (the medal of) the Sixth Order of Merit of the Decoration of the Cloud Banner. It has all provenance included framed.
USMCR79 Posted January 21 #2 Posted January 21 You need to ask yourself "Is this replaceable to you if it was stolen"? You can obtain a cloud and banner with documents for $1500 - $2500 but would it be your Dad's? So ask yourself how much is it worth to you? My guess would be irreplaceable - No amount of money can bring it back so the you set the value. My best advice Bill
KurtA Posted January 21 #3 Posted January 21 Totally agree. I feel “insurance” is a waste of money for an irreplaceable family heirloom that you have no monetary investment into. It’s all about “what it is/what it represents “, as opposed to “what it’s worth”. What would be the “financial harm” to you be if something happened to it? I think the “Antique Roadshow” has created a distorted perception that inherited collectibles must be insured. They always also assign an “insurance value. And they typically assign a much higher value for “insurance purposes”. All that rambling aside, that is a great medal you have there. Awesome that it was awarded to your father. We would all find any other items you can post of great interest. Especially squadron patches, insignia and uniforms.
Dave Posted January 22 #4 Posted January 22 If I was to do an Antiques Roadshow type appraisal for insurance purposes, I'd say somewhere around $4k.
