Chrwag Posted January 18 #1 Posted January 18 I acquired this badge on EBay and the name and serial number are for an airman that went MIA in the pacific in 1944 when his B24 was last seen being chased by 10 Zero fighters. I figure the wing was sent back to the family with his gear after or he mailed it home after completion of Aerial Gunner school in Yuma or Las Vegas. On the Internet his sister died in 2025 so assume her family sold her stuff including the badge. when I received the badge I can see this it started life as a Air Crew badge and the Gunner winged bullet was added after. I primarily collect submarine dolphins and wanted to know if the reused practice was common at Moody Brothers?
rathbonemuseum.com Posted January 18 #2 Posted January 18 Take a look in this thread. That was their standard way of making multiple patterns like the air gunner and bombardier.
5thwingmarty Posted January 19 #3 Posted January 19 This looks like the standard concentric ring target base wing Moody Bros. used for all their Aerial Gunner wings. Tod has the only Moody Bros. Bombardier wing I have ever seen and it was made with this type of base wing. Moody Bros. did make Aircrew wings but they look completely different than the Aerial Gunner wings.
Chrwag Posted January 19 Author #4 Posted January 19 I can see some of air crew insignia in between the bullet and wings at the bottom. Hence my question about adding the aerial Gunner insignia and selling to the schools at Yuma, Las Vegas or Kingman Az. moody Brothers seemed to change their focus to the Aerial Gunner badge when they became a primary supplier to western schools.
5thwingmarty Posted January 22 #5 Posted January 22 If you can take any photos that show the Aircrew insignia behind the winged bullet please post them. I am not aware of Moody ever making Aircrew wings in this pattern.
5thwingmarty Posted January 22 #6 Posted January 22 Here are photos of what a typical Moody Bros. Aircrew wing looks like so you can see their style was completely different that their Aerial Gunner wings.
