Panzerjunky Posted January 11 #1 Posted January 11 Good evening, folks I am still trying to figure out these Jumpers. so, the last one in question is. From what I can see a WW2 Us navy Jumper (sorry no pics as it is at the cleaners) It has a Cook 3rd grade or steward 2nd class Rate patch. But it also has an amphibious assault patch. The rate patch is the post 44 version with the chevrons. But my question is.... what would a steward be on an amphib assault team? I feel the correct rating patch would be a Boatswains Mate or something like that. I am feeling someone just slapped a patch on this jumper to make it more attractive sale wise. Lastly can anyone recommend a good reff. Book or books on WW2 Navy service uniforms as well as one on WW2 US Army and USMC dress uniforms. I have plenty on combat stuff but nothing on class a
David Minton Posted January 11 #2 Posted January 11 “The Naval Amphibious Forces insignia was authorized in June 1944 to be worn by enlisted personnel who either: * Completed training in amphibious warfare at bases of the Amphibious Training Command * Were on duty with scouts and raiders, naval combat demolition units, beach jumpers, joint assault signal companies, beach battalions, standard landing craft units * Or were serving aboard the vessels: Landing Ship, Tank (LST), Landing Ship, Medium (LSM), Landing Craft, Support (LCS), Attack Cargo Ship (AKA), High Speed Transport (APD), Landing Ship, Infantry (Large) [LCI(L)], Landing Craft, Tank (LCT), Amphibious Command Ship (LCC), Attack Transport (APA), Landing Ship, Support (Large) [LCS(L)(3)], Landing Ship, Vehicle (LSV), Landing Ship, Dock (LSD), Amphibious Force Flagship (AGC).” https://www.history.navy.mil/our-collections/artifacts/uniforms-and-personal-equipment/pins--badges--and-insignia/patches/amphibious-forces-patch.html

That was the same info I had looked up as well. But that info led to my question. What rates would you find on an amphibious landing party. I am most sure a cook or steward would not be on that list LOL. Why would a slot in a school be given to personal who would never use it??? And it may have been an issue as cooks and stewards were still part of a segregated army at that point in time?? Thanks Jerry

AMPHIBIOUS, includes ALL CREW MEMBERS, of amphibious assault ships, LSTs, LSMs, APAs, AKAs, LSDs, APBs, etc. those ships had full crews. Now, aboard those ships, Cooks, Stewards, Storekeepers, Yeomen, anyone, who’s regular job was not “Combat Related, was assigned to battle stations, as gun crews, magazine crews, phone talkers, stretcher bearers, and on Amphibious Ships, Cargo Handlers. They rigged the stuff the Troops ashore were needing and moved it from the holds, and into the boats. A Boatswain Mate would be in charge, and the Supply/Admin guys provided the man power. The patch was worn by all enlisted in the crew. It had nothing to do with “Landing Parties” or even being Boat Crew.

Thanks Again Jerry My uncle was a Chief Commissary Steward on the USS Elkhorn. Chiefs and Officers didn’t wear the SSI. But his Battle Station was as a 40mm Gun Captain.
