WWII US Army Stars and Stripes War Correspondents Medal Group - WWI British Army veteran

This Group presented some surprises.

The veteran was a British veteran of WWI who moved to the USA in the 1920s. He later joined the NYNG in 1940 and then transferred to the US Army Adjutant Generals Dept as a 2nd Lt, assigned as a war correspondent to the Stars and Stripes and reported on both D-DAY and Operation Market Garden. He jumped into Holland with the 502nd Para Inf , and was one of the first people into Eindhoven. The unit presented him with the jump wing for making the combat jump. He also flew combat missions with both the 8th AAF and RAF.

Even with all that experience it appears he felt it necessary to enhance his medal group. The medals were pinned in an old frame and have been there for many years. This turned up in Palm Desert and he died in Palm Desert in 1977. A collector did not do this.

I took 2 photos of the medals. The photo with the black background shows them as he displayed them. The 2 pieces missing in bottom of the frame were wings, probably given to him. The photo in the riker mount with the white background shows the medals he actually earned.

I can find no record that he earned a WWI MC ( he was a PVT in WWI anyway) or either CDG . He did not earn a 1914/15 star.

This MC is actually a French made WWI example.

Even with that it is still an INCREDIBLE group. He earned his Bronze Star for the Holland jump and it is officially named.
