Did I ruin this button or was it not old to begin with?

I had a button that was really bad looking and I did not think it was worth anything so I threw it in the sonic cleaner and accidently forgot it.  It was in with water, a couple drops of dawn and a couple drops of lemon juice.  When I pulled it out, rinsed it with water and then wiped it, everything just came off.  Did I ruin it?  I am fairly new to the whole military button thing.  I want them pretty but guess I am wrong in that.  I have managed to not mess with most of my buttons.  Below is the picture, any feedback is appreciated.   When I look at it with the naked eye it looks great but in that picture I notice it does not look as good.
