I didn't know about this book years ago, wish I had. I do have it now. Out of print but still can be had.

On page 104 there is a B&W photo of an Apache Scout taken in 1916. He is wearing the M1911 Campaign hat with 'USS' pin in front. no arrows. It also has the hat cord but being in B&W, would it be the Red & White colors given to Indian scouts back during the Indian Wars?

The acorn end cords he wears are post Span Am. These do exist in the color for the Indian scouts, white background flecked with red.  The bronzed USS device he wears was adopted in the 1902 regs.
