Remember Me Posted December 15, 2025 #1 Posted December 15, 2025 What is kind of neat. I had gotten a named USMC good conduct off of friend that had bought a medal collector's collection. I just bought the GC because it was named. A friend had got there before me this morning. He was going to buy a soochow medal from him. I didn't know what that was. He bought it. Then I saw these books and saw there was a bunch of discharge papers inside. I figured I couldn't go wrong for $10 a book. I get home look at the name and put 2 and 2 together and the GC medal is named to the same man. He had been in the army before the Marines. Now to try and get the medal before he parts with it.
themick Posted December 15, 2025 #2 Posted December 15, 2025 OUTSTANDING photo group, and of course, the Good Conduct and paper. Those photos are great. Yes, make a concerted effort to convince you friend to let you acquire the Soo Chow Creek medal. It's a must do kinda thing!! Good luck, and thanks for sharing your new acquisition. Since you got this collection at what appears to be a bargain price. don't be afraid to make him an "offer he can't refuse." Steve
manayunkman Posted December 15, 2025 #3 Posted December 15, 2025 What an awesome collection with tremendous history. Love the photo of their helmets.
yokota57 Posted December 15, 2025 #4 Posted December 15, 2025 Massaged for ease of viewing. Fantastic grouping!
KASTAUFFER Posted December 15, 2025 #5 Posted December 15, 2025 Nice find, especially that certificate. Get that Soochow! Kurt
Kurt Barickman Posted December 15, 2025 #6 Posted December 15, 2025 Very nice! Echoing Kurt and Steve and get the Soochow!!! Kurt
Dirk Posted December 15, 2025 #7 Posted December 15, 2025 Those books/magazines are very rare….they first legation guard annuals….very few copies exist. Also highly desirable is the 32 Soochow paper work…..much harder to find then even the medal itself! Great pick up on your part! Nice picture of Marines on the Soochow for the 32 battle….The Chinese studio portrait on linen paper is named….can you please let us know which studio it was taken at…..I maintain a data base on the studios.
Remember Me Posted December 15, 2025 Author #8 Posted December 15, 2025 I had to take a picture in the mirror. The imprint was easier to read from the back. Held a light on it. I have another picture of him but his nose was leaning the wrong way. I noticed his shirt was buttoning the wrong way. Must be reversed photo. Friend said he would part with the medal. There is no ribbon. His last discharge says the reason for honorable discharge is purchase. What does that mean. Thank you.
Dirk Posted December 15, 2025 #9 Posted December 15, 2025 Thank you! Was not aware of that studio! Glad you’re getting the medal. He was able to purchase his way out of the Marines…..sometimes it was offered if manpower numbers needed adjusting. Again fantastic China Marine group!
Remember Me Posted December 15, 2025 Author #10 Posted December 15, 2025 He went from Army cavalry (June 1917-June 1919)non mounted to Marines back to Army infantry for little over a year. Thanks Dirk.
