ShibaLegend Posted November 23, 2025 #1 Posted November 23, 2025 The veteran shown here is as far as I know still alive, so for the sake of privacy I won't divulge his name. I really don't know much about his service, beyond the fact that he served on the USS Macon and USS Telfair. I also don't currently know when he entered and left the Navy (Might be a "in-between" Korea and Nam vet) Anyways, firstly here's the overview of everything.
ShibaLegend Posted November 23, 2025 Author #2 Posted November 23, 2025 Various small items. The field book is actually something civilian related. I dont know who the service bars are for, they were at the estate so I picked them up. The Bible is 1957 dated. I think the pocket knife is something he picked up after his service, as the box itself says made in china.
ShibaLegend Posted November 23, 2025 Author #3 Posted November 23, 2025 Now onto photos. I think these are either from relatives or maybe for the third photo a friend of the vet or his family. The middle photo shows someone in the USAF.
ShibaLegend Posted November 23, 2025 Author #4 Posted November 23, 2025 Pictures of the vet himself, and a cut out piece of newspaper for the USS Macon.
ShibaLegend Posted November 23, 2025 Author #5 Posted November 23, 2025 Photos taken by (I assume) him during his service.
ShibaLegend Posted November 23, 2025 Author #6 Posted November 23, 2025 Next, a yearbook of his service on the Telfair (this book was made only a few years before the Telfair was decommissioned for the final time). The book on the right is essentially a giant technical manual for various aspects of I believe boiler room systems.
ShibaLegend Posted November 23, 2025 Author #7 Posted November 23, 2025 Next, his uniforms. Unfortunately I either missed out on his insignia or they were never at the sale, which wouldn't surprise me cause I have a hunch he didn't keep a lot from his service. Anyways, two of his uniforms ratings are for machinist mate, and the last for boiler technician. Can anyone tell what the silver star above the rank patch is for?
ShibaLegend Posted November 23, 2025 Author #8 Posted November 23, 2025 And lastly, I posted this separately but this reversible poncho was at his estate. Overall, I paid $37 for everything you see in this topic, can't say I did too bad.
CinamonToastCrunch Posted November 23, 2025 #9 Posted November 23, 2025 The star patch is a part of his rate. He was a senior chief petty officer. From the photograph he is wearing a us navy good conduct medal and the national defense medal. He probably enlisted right at the end of the Korean War and was eligible for the medal. Nice group, his muster records would be available on ancestry.
