WWI PAINTED HELMETS

BEAST

It's not uncommon to see USMC helmets with two holes. At some point before the insignia was painted on, the EGA was most likely attached to the lower hole. It seems to me that I've seen some examples where the insignia was applied, and the EGA went back in the same hole, right in the middle of the star.

164th Field Artillery Brigade. It's unusual to see non-USMC helmets with metal insignia, except for examples with Officers cap eagles affixed. I always wondered if this one might have belonged to an officer.

post-4583-1229534662.jpg Here is a rather ugly 5th Marine reg helmet. I have seen this poorly executed orange yellow indian and star before and always in this same batt. Anyone else here have one? Dave

And finally, a name, R D Stark.

Private Raleigh D. Stark. 20th Company, 3/5. This is the 3rd 20th Company 3/5 helmet I have seen with a double punch like that. I am starting to believe that they were ordered to post their EGAs low and then told to put them up high. Very interesting!
